SIP or PIP (SCHOOL or PROFESSIONAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECT) PLAN OF ACTION – May be used in your Action Research Planning, Week 3 Assignment, Part 2 and 3
Using the information and skills developed in EDLD 5311, including your intern plan, and the knowledge and skills developed in EDLD 5301 Action Research, you will be developing a comprehensive school or professional improvement action plan that you will be able to design and implement in collaboration with your site supervisor(s) and any other support staff and stakeholders. Your task is to propose a narrative and an action plan, which would begin the ascension to exemplary status, or improve specific targeted areas if your campus is already exemplary.
You should base your approach on your leadership learning’s, the National and Texas Standards and Competencies, your own leadership knowledge, experience and skills developed through your course self-assessments, campus supervised and embedded course leadership experiences. You are to use as much data as needed for your SIP or PIP, including actual test scores, needs assessment contributing to the Campus Improvement Plan and information from your campus and/or district (AEIS or PBMAS/AYP data, etc.). The Dana and Harris et al. texts provide a variety of tools for gathering data for your PIP/SIP.
Your proposal should be agreed to in collaboration with your campus supervisor(s), members of specific committees (e.g., SBDM), and any others that are stakeholders in helping you to implement, monitor and assess your SIP or PIP.
In developing your Action Research Plan*, we ask that you use Tool 7.1 from the Harris et al. text, and also posted in the Resource section of this course, or use the following action plan template for this activity:
SCHOOL VISION:
Develop improved staff development in technology integration to increase technology usage in teacher lessons.
GOAL:
OUTCOMES ACTIVITIES RESOURCES/ RESEARCH TOOLS NEEDED RESPONSIBILITY TO ADDRESS ACTIVITIES TIME LINE Benchmarks/
ASSESSMENT Revisions to SIP/PIP based on monitoring and assessments
Determine what technology resources are available to LEHS teachers.
Perform an inventory of all technology resources on the High School campus.
Inventory list. Matt Fry will work with Jason Brown and Sarah Anderson to complete the inventory. Fall 2011 Complete inventory
Determine how often teachers use technology on their lessons.
Perform survey of high school teachers related to technology usage. Online survey to be completed by teachers. Matt Fry Fall 2011 At least 90% of High School teachers complete survey.
Determine what technology staff development, if any, teachers received on the technology available to them.
Perform survey of high school teachers related to technology staff development. Online survey to be completed by teachers. Matt Fry Fall 2011 At least 90% of High School teachers complete survey.
Develop staff development specifically related to integrating technology into daily lessons.
Work with staff in department meetings to determine ways to integrate technology and provide adequate training to the teachers to use it. Lesson plans and knowledge of technology available. Matt Fry, Jason Brown January 2012 Have at least 3 lessons per grading period in each department integrating technology.
Perform post-program surveys to see if the statistics in the previous surveys have changed.
Perform survey of high school teachers related to technology staff development. Online survey to be completed by teachers. Matt Fry Spring 2012 At least 90% of High School teachers complete survey.
*Remember, the Action Research Plan is the framework or blueprint for your Action Research Project that may take several courses, and months, to complete. One of the major goals of EDLD 5301 is to provide this blueprint to assist you in implementing, monitoring and assessing your Action Research Project process and product.
Report and Dissemination of SIP/PIP Findings, Implications and Recommendations: Students will be asked to develop a School Improvement Action Plan Report for your Final Comprehensive Report in EDLD 5398. This report should also address the findings, implications and recommendations from your action research. The report should also provide information and examples of how you shared and disseminated progress on your SIP/PIP throughout your internship via blogs, wikis, and Discussion Board postings. This dissemination plan is addressed in your Week Three Assignment, Part 4.

Week 2 reflection
This week we are supposed to narrow the focus of our Action Research Plan.
I had a few different topics I thought about for action research dealing with technology.
1) Will online learning communities keep students more engaged?
2) How can we change professional development in technology to help teachers use technology more effectively in their assignments?
3) Will iPads be a useful tool for classroom teachers?
After discussion with my site mentor we decided it would be best to focus on number 2 since the other two depend on it. We have a problem at our school. Teachers have access to technology, but many times to not use it effectively. For many of our teachers having students create a Powerpoint or type a paper in Word is the extent of technology integration. We have Smart boards, mobile labs, iPad labs, and a plethora of software available to teachers. The problem is that professional development has been limited to learning how these things work and not on how to integrate them into lessons. Technology can be a daunting prospect for many teachers as it is. Expecting them to change the lessons they already know how to teach and come up with ways on their own to use technology can be completely overwhelming. I want to evaluate our professional development and work with the technology staff and administration to try to improve it.

What is Action Research?
Administrative inquiry or action research is “the process of a principal engaging in systematic, intentional study of his/her own administrative practice and taking action for change based on what he/she learns as a result of the inquiry.” Dana (2009)
In other words, action research is the way administrators can look at themselves objectively to evaluate the way they perform their jobs. Through action research administrators use a cyclical pattern of reflection and action to evaluate themselves, take action to improve, and then evaluate themselves again. This gives administrators valuable feedback that they can use to determine the best practices to do their jobs at a higher level. As administrators participate in action research, they will develop a sense of ownership and should eventually develop an inquiry stance in which they regularly question their own practices and evaluate them.
I think I can use action research in my chosen field of Educational Technology to evaluate myself to ensure that I am constantly working to both learn and teach about new technology that is available in the classroom. Teachers who want to use technology in the classroom need someone who can steer them through the plethora of information available and given them practical, proven methods to use technology effectively to enhance their lessons. I think that is the primary responsibility of someone in education technology. Because of that, action research will be vital to ensure than I am effectively meeting the needs of the teachers, so they can meet the needs of students. Because, after all, that is why we are all in education in the first place.

How Educational Leaders Might Use Blogs
Educational leaders can use blogs to provide a central location for their thoughts an analysis on their job as well as provide insight to those they work with about themselves.
Administrators can sometimes seem inaccessible to their employees. A blog can provide both a formal and informal venue for an administrator to communicate with those around them. A blog can give administrators a place to share about themselves, their interests, and their vision for the school. Colleagues can read their blog and gain valuable insight into the administrator. It may also help to dispel some misconceptions that may exist simply due to lack of communication.
In short a blog can be a window into the ideas of the administrator and another point of contact for those who work with them.
